Untitled Landscape iii

Woven strips of scrap silver gelatin handprints

28 x 38 cm

From the artist:

"The woven work is made up of short strips of excess/cutoff pieces of silver gelatin prints from a large work I am busy with.  The pieces have been bonded to create long strips which are then woven.  The majority of the work is from an image of a recently photographed landscape (cliff face of fynbos) and some pieces from an image of a male figure from a different work.  If you closely you will notice subtle details of the body weaving in and out of the landscape.  The body thus becomes part of the landscape and the landscape becomes a body as it manifests in this instance as a unique artwork with form and dimension."

We also asked Strauss to comment on the frame, he says: "When framing, I try to find solutions that complement the work, or might activate it in some way. The warp and weft of linen echoes the woven structure of the work. While the muted purple undertone of walnut compliments the cool blacks and grays of the silver gelatin prints"
