Josephine Grindrod
Josephine Grindrod was born in Durban, South Africa in 1963. She lives and works in Cape Town.
Situating her painting practice as an embodied, critical and generative response to
found narratives, objects and images, Grindrod is interested in the imaginal as a
realm allowing both personal and social transformation.
Grindrod holds an MA in Visual Studies from the Stellenbosch University, writing
her dissertation on Art and the Imaginary Realm of Psychoanalysis (2006). She
has also studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town,
including Discourse of Art (2014), an Advanced Diploma in Painting (1987), and a
BA Fine Arts degree (1984). She is currently a PhD candidate in Visual History at
the University of the Western Cape.
Grindrod has attended annual residencies and workshops with artist/teachers
Rosenclaire in South Africa and Italy (2009 – 2024) as well as Tupelo Triangle
Arts Workshops, Nyanga (2017) and Woodstock (2007).
Grindrod has participated in numerous group shows and has held a number of
solo exhibitions, the most recent being Fecund: A Garden of Earthy Delight,
Everard Read Cape Town (2025).
Her work is held in local and international private, corporate and public collections.
