Katherine Spindler
Katherine loves to teach. She has taught at tertiary and secondary levels throughout her career, including at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and Cape Town Creative Academy. She’s currently on a teaching sabbatical.
Katherine is working on a book. She loves working with text through collage and is exploring the role of language in making as an artist with Aphantasia (having no mind’s eye).Katherine keeps rearranging. She moves her home around as much as she does her paintings. She finds her way through the physical act of problem solving. She rotates her paintings as she paints, and also works on the reverse side.Katherine recognises that for her making happens in seasons. There is “painting season” of course, but there is also “reading season”, “collecting season”, “travelling season”, “writing season”, “collaging and gilding season”, and more.
Katherine has a BA(FA) and a MFA (cum laude) from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town (UCT). She presented numerous solo exhibitions, including the landmark presentation Still at the FNB Johannesburg Art Fair in 2018. Later this body of work featured in the Paris Conservatory’s prestigious publication Saison 2023/2024, which explores and celebrates the intersections of image, sound, teaching, and learning.
