"My response is to reflect on the gold mounds that leave yellow dust, and the yellow dust that gives the air a warmth and a bite. The same dust finds its way into sand, and the sand is used to build with (perhaps mixed into concrete). In some ways the settled dust permeates into the materiality of the built environment. The warm winter light in Johannesburg bleaches built surfaces. And South Africa’s midday sun renders everything like an overexposed photograph."
