“This artwork was inspired by the Scramble for Africa and the role the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 in ushering in a period of heightened colonial activity. It explores the influence of British missionaries and Imperial rule in Africa. While missionaries were teaching people literacy and the bible, imperialists were dispossessing them off their land, its resources and imposing their rule.
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o wrote in his seminal book Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature (1986): “the real aim of colonialism was to control [Africans] wealth…”
He argues that language is not only a means of communication, but a carrier of a people’s history and culture - it is integral to how people produce and sustain their wealth.”
