From the artist:
"During lockdown I began painting on rolled out pieces of clay, drawing on the ancient tradition of mapmaking on clay tablets. While listening to the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying and researching Buddhist mandala painting, I was inspired to illustrate the 6 illusionary realms of Samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth.
It felt appropriate to interpret these six realms as maps of islands. The isolation in my home during lockdown felt like living on an island, but at the same time very comforting and safe. Quite similar to the way Buddhists describes bardo, the state between two lives on earth. Metaphorically, it could also describe times when our usual pattern of life is interrupted by the unknown.
My island works that I made during this unstable and apocalyptic period represents the immediate state between my two worlds, but also a route to the next destination."
